Being a photojournalist was something I wanted to be from a very early age. Portraits that can show an individuals personality with mood, lighting, angle, color and expression has always spoke to my heart and soul. My absolute favorite photographer was Annie Leibovitz as I was growing up. Her past work in Life Magazine, Rolling Stone Magazine and Vogue still inspires me today. This is why I decided to get my bachelors degree in Photojournalism. It wasn’t until after college that I discovered the need for all those elements and moments to be documented during a wedding day. I began assisting with wedding photographers in Chicago right out of college and within two years I began my own photography studio. Then, I named myself Shutter Happy Studios and I photographed people; weddings, babies, children, families, events, engagements, etc. After 5 years, I had completely outgrown my photography studio name that was originally a phrase I used in college as each class demanded large numbers of film rolls each week. So, when I got married and began my own family I took it upon myself to operate as my own name, Heather Brulez Photography, and specialize in photographing the events and people that I love. As Heather Brulez Photography, I specialize in weddings and newborns. Weddings are my true blood. I love to show candid, raw emotion and a wedding day is purely that in every sense of joy. Wedding days feed my soul that sense of adventure and need to create editorial photography and high-end portraits. Then, came babies. My love for newborn photography has grown out of that adoration for my own. That and I love seeing my past wedding clients start a family and getting to meet their bundles of joy makes my heart smile. Of course, we’ve also recently added back into the line up all that goes with newborns which is babies, smash cake sessions, maternity sessions and a limited number of family portrait sessions each year. Going on my 8th year in business, I still yearn to educate myself, appreciate all the wonderful photographers out there, local and internationally, and find inner peace and joy when building relationships with new and returning clients.
