When I choose outfits for our family sessions it requires 5 outfits that go together without being obnoxious and I start by choosing an inspiration piece and build around it. Like a floral skirt would take me to denim and stripes and sweaters in the same color scheme. I physically take that inspiration piece, lay it on the floor and start building the rest…like my very own live inspiration board, on the bedroom floor. The same principle applies. Choose your favorite thing and build around it.
1. Don’t Match!
You don’t wear matching outfits every day and you shouldn’t attempt to for your engagement session either. I’m not saying you should wear plaid and he should wear polka dots. But, there’s no need for you both to wear navy sweaters and Khaki pants. You both have a personality and it takes two. So let your personalities shine, together!
2. Plan to bring more than a few outfits, just in case
I always like to incorporate a casual and a dressy outfit to give you variety in your style and show two sides of your personality. It’s better safe than sorry. Bringing a few extra pieces will give you options at your locations.
3. Wear layers and different textures when possible
Removing layers can change up a unified look quickly and easily. Textures, especially during Fall and Winter will add to the session in the same way they do in your home decor.
4. Accessories
When choosing accessories, ask yourself, does this enhance or take away from your style?
5. Avoid super trendy styles that could potentially date your images quickly
Then again, this is one of those rules that is sometimes made to be broken! If you’re a trendy girl, go for it!
6. Take your background into account
Don’t wear green to the park and expect to stand out from the green background. Compliment your setting without blending into the scene.
7. Be natural and comfortable
It’s perfectly great to choose an outfit that resembles your every day. Feeling uncomfortable in front of the camera makes it difficult to be natural and take natural images. Beauty professionals are also recommended on your photo day but you should keep your make-up close to what you wear on a normal basis as well.
BONUS TIP: If you’re still having trouble choosing your outfits, have your fiance choose their favorite outfit and go shopping with that outfit in mind. Choose something that goes with the style, shape and color palette without matching it exactly. After all, your engagement session is the perfect excuse for a new outfit!
